IPKOASON
Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables and traditional Korean art meet in this performance. The pansori-based imagination and view shed new light on the life of inspector Javert.
Introduction
The motif of
Javert was born of a father sentenced to forced labor and a fortunetelling mother. So he was born and raised in the prison. Such a background led others to point the finger at him. Having grown up that way, he has the word “survival” engraved deep inside his heart. In such a tumultuous and ruthless society, this vulnerable young man has to make a choice between protecting or attacking society.
Pansori co-creation group of singers and drummers
IPKOASON refers to a pansori singer’s mouth (“ip” in Korean) and a drummer’s hand (“son” in Korean).
This is a pansori co-creation group gathering together singers and drummers who have worked on various
productions between tradition and creation. Based on each member’s own artistic experience, they carry
out borderless experiments in a variety of ways. Their goal is to secure the contemporary aspect of
traditional art and to develop the process of creating pansori. In order to make pansori function as a
genre and a means of preserving classics, they ceaselessly come up with different work processes and
present new pansori works. They are also preparing brand new works making clear each member’s musical
individuality and thematic ideas.
