Future of humanity and existential questions unfolded through the human body in the world of Ezras

This is the second performance of Jung Hunmok’s series ‘Transhumanism and Love for Humanity.’ Using the human body, it unfolds a contemporary discourse on themes such as “transboundary,” “transhuman” and “genderless.”

Introduction

Produced after <Yaras>, <Ezras> is the second performance of Jung Hunmok’s series ‘Transhumanism and Love for Humanity.’ As implied in the first performance, <Ezras> addtionally deals with a discourse on the future of humanity and the theme of “borderless.” Centered around the “human body,” different issues regarding “transboundary” unfold on stage, in combination with restrained, minimalist XR videos. Along with contmporary sensibility and realistic imagination, the work expresses several themes: “existence of reality and virtual reality,” “human and non-human” and “transhuman and genderless.”

Synopsis

The term “Ezra” derives from a Hebrew word “azar” which means “help” and “protection.” The performance excludes the religious or political perspective of the term in order to focus on its role as a “protector” or a “medium.” Here, Ezra is a fictional character who leads a tribe and his tribe is called “Ezras.” The performance unveils the misinterpreted human body, experimenting with the limits of what is possible. It also breaks prejudice and describes distorted humanity. In this way, it creates a unique world view in the space of <Ezras>whose barriers have been broken down.

  • “Jung Hunmok seems to focus on inducing different forms of open thinking through sensuous stimulation, rather than insisting on his arguments. In parallel with his unique interpretation and his directing that triggers imagination, he even draws on truly theatrical videos which make use of mise-en-scène, overcoming the limits of the analogue body. All this makes us look forward to his next production.”
    - Song Junho, dance critic
  • “People have lived in a society of oppression and control where they have been forced to follow rules and order. From deep inside, dregs of everyone’s emotions gush out through their body movements and acts.”
    - Ko Seunghee, journalist of 'Herald Economy'
