Salon NEXT

Salon NEXT is a program that supports the diverse experiments and creative energy of emerging artists.

Salon NEXT: Curator & Creator

A platform where performing arts curators explore the questions and possibilities of the next generation of artists.
It introduces participating artists and their showcase works, while examining the questions of today together with curators.

Clone Poem

<Clone Poem> follows the journey of a girl who possesses the ability to replicate the pain of nonhuman beings. Here, the “replication of pain” functions as a metaphor that reappropriates and subverts contemporary technological civilization. It can also be a reflection on the Anthropocene that has already arrived, and an ethical and political practice grounded in a new epistemology for reorganizing the world and the self. How can we sense the pain of the nonhuman other? With this impossible question as its premise, <Clone Poem> seeks to radically reconfigure the anthropocentric world.

Lightning and Thunder

<Lightning and Thunder> is a performance about a single event splitting into different phenomena that arrive at different times. When events with a clear sequence, like lightning and thunder, unfold one after another, cause and effect can become blurred or appear to be reversed. The work examines this phenomenon through theatre. Lightning and thunder can never meet, yet each attests to the other’s existence. In other words, lightning lip-syncs thunder, while thunder dubs lightning. When lip-syncing and dubbing—two things that cannot happen simultaneously—take place at the same time, the work embraces the misunderstandings that inevitably arise and uses them as a driving force for making theatre.

Notice

This performance is a showcase. Each creator's presentation and introduction will be followed by a roundtable discussion.

Director

Choi Hyunbee

Making a Place for Private Disasters

Choi Hyunbee writes, directs, and makes performances. Taking text as a point of departure, she interweaves elements such as bodies, devices, objects, and technologies, intervening in contemporary modes of existence and the conditions of perception. She has developed her work by approaching the stage as a place of private disaster, where the traces and memories left by a body mingle with trauma and impure imaginings.

Jeong Chandong

Performing in Transit, Theatre as a Place of Passage

Jeong Chandong works with theatre as a place of passage rather than a destination. He is interested in what happens when one thing passes through another, and calls whatever is transformed, disappears, or emerges in the process “theatre.” He designs fissures in things that are conventionally bound together, drawing the driving force of his performing from the different sensations, words, and bodies that emerge in passing through those gaps. He has been working as a team with performer Jo Eojin and sound engineer Jeong Gihoon. The group is set to officially launch this December with the performance <Naming the Team> (working title).

Curator

Jun Jin Mo

A theatre director and director of Sinchon Theatre. He writes and directs from time to time. In creating and running the theatre, he has approached both the space and the artists he works with from the perspective of a theatre director, shaping its annual programme around questions and possibilities still in motion rather than finished works. He is interested in creating spaces and relationships through which an artist’s questions and possibilities can take shape as work.

Sinchon Theatre

Sinchon Theatre (opened in June 2017) is a tiny rooftop space filled with physical limitations and constraints. Yet it seeks to serve as a space for the diverse and progressive forms of self-expression that the performing arts, regardless of genre, can encompass. Each year, its programme is shaped around the artists it works with. It seeks to engage with possibility rather than completion.
