“One day, all of a sudden, men began disappearing”

<Women of Earth> is a play based on writer Park Mun-yeoung’s novel of the same name, which is known as a Korean feminist sci-fi novel. Nearly 160 verbally and physically aggressive men disappear from a small city. Women are confused as their grandfathers, fathers, husbands, sons and friends disappear. Sometimes they build solidarity just because they are women, while sometimes clashing with each other as they face their own challenges. Women’s relationships, which have been forged in a male-centered world, also change. <Women of Earth> allows the audience to look back on ourselves in a supernatural setting.
Jeon Gang-hee (Dramatug)

Synopsis

This is Guju – a city 3-4 hours away from Seoul by bus. Newly married Seong-yeon lives in Guju with her husband Hyeong-geun. She is a teacher at a small cram school. Working as a media artist, Hyeong-geun leaves for Seoul for a month-long project and Seong-yeon sees him off. That day, a Filipino woman’s husband suddenly disappears while visiting his ancestors’ graves. White light starts surrounding him slowly and he just disappears into thin air. More men start disappearing in Guju and rumors spread. Some say it’s because of environmental pollution while some blame materials from space. The mysterious disappearances make news on public TV channels along with rumors and unconfirmed studies. Searches for the missing men render no results while many women who were being abused by the men find their disappearances pleasant. In the meantime, the number of missing men continues to grow with more rumors and unconfirmed hypotheses.
