Creative VaQi
세월호, 분단현실, 검열 등 국가폭력의 역사가 개인과 공동체에 미치는 영향을 리서치하고 다양한 미학적 형식으로 공연화 했던 극단 크리에이티브 VaQi가 제주 4.3 사건에 주목한다. 그들은 실제 4.3사건의 유가족인 배우 장성익과 함께 지난 수 개월간 제주도의 4.3관련 학살지를 방문하고, 생존자 및 연구자들을 인터뷰하며 오늘날 4.3 사건을 기억하고 말하는 것이 어떤 의미가 있는지 탐구해왔다. 그 다층적 시간의 선들이 엮이고 엮이어 올해 10월 처음 관객을 만난다. 그러한 과정은 극단으로서 다시금 연극은 무엇이고, 그 무엇은 무엇에 대해서 말할 수 있는지에 대한 본질적 질문을 마주하게 해주었다.
Synopsis
이야기 하나. 배우 장성익의 아버지는 1947년 20살에 오사카에서 고향인 제주도로 돌아온다. 그해 제주 4.3이 터진다. 배우 장성익의 할아버지는 4·3 때 제주의 한 해변가에서 죽임을 당한다. 배우 장성익은 당시 자신의 아버지 입장을 돌이켜보며 그 시절로 들어가본다
이야기 둘. 한 섬의 인구 10분의 1이 7년 사이에 학살된다. 한 마을 안에 죽인 자와 죽임을 당한 자의 후손이 함께 살아간다. 왜 이러한 일이 일어났고 그것은 오늘 여기에 남아있는 사람들에게 어떤 흔적을 남겼을까? 생존자와 살아가는 자들의 증언이 배우들의 몸을 통해 전달된다
이야기 셋. 섬 공항의 활주로 아래에서 70여 년 만에 유해들이 발견된다. 누군가는 그 유해를 통해 70년 전 갑자기 사라진 아버지를 찾는다. 사실 유해는 공항뿐 만 아니라 섬 곳곳 땅 아래에서 여전히 조금씩 부패해가고 있다. 그 흙과 뼈를 생각하며 극장 안에서 소소한 의식들이 진행된다. 그리고 의식들을 통해 산 아래 묻혀있던, 바다 위에 떠다니던 섬 이야기들이 하나둘씩 지금 여기로 파도처럼 밀려 올라온다.
Kyung-sung Lee
Founding Creative VaQi with colleagues in 2008, Kyung-sung Lee has served as artistic director and theatre maker since then. Going beyond theatrical space and text-based works, Lee has collaborated with the artists specializing in media, installation art and dance. He has also attempted to present performances in daily spaces such as abandoned buildings, squares and crosswalks.
Work of Kyung-Sung Lee has been invited to many important theatres and festival abroad, such as Germany, England, Australia, Hong-Kong and Japan. He has received prestigious awards such as Don-A theatre award for New Conception, Doosan Yonkang Art award and Young Artist Award of the Time by Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Korea.
His representative works include <Namsan Documenta>, <Before After>, <Working Holiday>, <Love Story> and <Borderline>. He has served as 3rd artistic director of the Seoul Marginal Theatre Festival and is currently professor at the department Theatre&Film of Sungkyunkwan University.

Creative VaQi was founded in 2008. The Company’s name ‘VaQi’ means ‘wheel,’ as its Korean pronunciation is similar to that of ‘wheel.’ It is also the abbreviation of ‘Veritas, art, Question and imagination.’ Willing to traveling around the world like a wheel and to share the beauty with people everywhere, the Company pursues performances using materials of diverse genres such as objets, bodies, media and installation art, rather than presenting text-oriented plays.
The Company won the ‘Goblin Award’ at the 2009 Chuncheon International Mime Festival, the ‘Award for a Play of a New Concept’ at the 47th Dong-A Theater Awards. The Company was also selected as one of the three best plays of the year by the Korean Critics Association in 2014 and 2015. Their performances have been presented at international festivals and theaters in Germany, the UK, Japan, China, Australia and Hong Kong.
