A microcosm of humanity created by 19 acrobats and Rachid Ouramdane.
How would the individuals who belong to a society define their place?

Compagnie XY describe their acrobatics as a space of transformations activated by swells, conflict, and temporal loops. Their characters appear as a suspension in a time continuum that stretches and contracts in tune with the rhythm of the bodies changing shape right before the spectator’s eyes. Rachid Ouramdane’s skill with large ensembles pushes Compagnie XY’s dancers to combine their acrobatic performance with unexpected and emotional choreographic motifs.

Synopsis

Anchored in the fertile territory of acrobatics, Compagnie XY presents Möbius, a collaboration with Rachid Ouramdane. Möbius was born from a desire to escape gravity, a longing to take flight and soar upwards, out of the individual and into the bigger picture, the larger whole. It questions the relationship to oneself, to others, to the group, and the ability to live together in an extremely poetic vision. Nineteen acrobats, each of them unique, form human columns that constantly rise, become distorted, or overturn each other, coming together and breaking up in fractions of a second. As the protagonists seek solutions to ‘extreme’ situations, a collective intelligence emerges. Yet, in this highly charged microcosm of humanity the relationship between the individual and the group is continuously renegotiated, reminding us how we must all negotiate our place amongst others on a daily basis.

Compagnie XY

For nearly 15 years, Compagnie XY has been questioning acrobatic language through the practice of lifts. While relying on the fundamentals of this circus technique the artists of the collective play with the codes, rhythms and forms of acrobatics to put them back at the center of the artistic gesture. In this context, the collective has chosen to turn to the public through the collective creation of large forms for the theater, public space or any place that allows frontal or circular representation. The collective now has nearly 40 acrobats, 19 of whom today carry the creation of Möbius , which remains the heart of the company's approach. Since 2017, Cie XY has been associated for all of its projects with the Phénix de Valenciennes as part of the European Center for Creation as well as with the Cirque-théâtre d'Elbeuf - National Center for Circus Arts in Normandy. It has also been supported since 2016 by the Bnp-Paribas foundation.
