Remembering, racing and relativizing fundamental site of host and guest relationship formation in between contemporary music and dance

The performance borrows the lips of traditional music and the body of contemporary dance to portray the future accelerating into a mysterious world. In such world, we don’t know whether it’s us operating machines or it’s the machines operating us.

Synopsis

<Kkokdugaksi> is a dance, a song and a game. It is also the symbol of a funeral, women, and a doll, making it an embodiment of passivity as represented by marionette. Consequently, <Kkokdugaksi> is a work of ambiguity. Dancers and musicians all dance, sing and play on the stage. As they play, they switch positions between the host and guests, the ruler and oppressed. Here, the host, who is simply a group of guests, reshapes the scene of otherizing himself as he otherizes the guests.

Gomool

Formed in 2009, music coterie Gomool took off from issues related to traditional musical creations, facing issues of traditional music, pursuing alternative awareness and putting them into performances. Their staged documentaries include <Gukakjueuijadeul> (2017), <Iraedo Taepyeongseongdae> (2015), <Three Critical Debates on the Traditional Music of Korea> (2010) and <A Song’s Life and Death> (2019), among many.

Goblin Party

Goblin Party is a group of dancers who resemble Korean dokkaebi – creatures that mesmerize people with extraordinary powers and abilities. They aim to stay close to the people of today as a part of stories while they dance. They also focus on the audience and expanding their perspectives by creating works that are based on contemporary dance. Their works include <Once upon a Time> (2016), which has won the award for best five works from the Korean Association of Dance Critics and Researchers, <Silver Knife> (2016), an invitation program of European contemporary dance platform Aerowaves, and <Playground> (2020), which has won a choreography award from the Changmu Arts Center.

  • “I’ve seen many collaborations, but this one is another level. They penetrate deep into each other’s genre, replacing each other. Conflicting nonverbal elements like dance and music, movements and sounds, clash with one another. However, they don’t do these according to their will; they accept unfamiliarity, taking the performance to the climax as they control each other.”

  • “Movements enable musicians to play; at the same time, they extend into the field of choreography. In that sense, the movements of music and the movements of dancers intertwine with each other seamlessly.”

  • “<Kkokdugaksi> was different. Its analysis and interpretation are either clear or absent; yet it uses the keyword “kkokdugaksi” to separate and dissemble, continuing to form an interesting network of meanings, which I highly commend. To top it off, it’s not hard to understand at all – it’s rather fun!”
