Witness Stand is a sound installation for a city, situated on a distinctive urban site at Naksan Park. The show arises from our desire to create a form that can encompass different points of view, held within a tolerant and robust musical framework. With multiple perspectives across the city of Seoul, ‘a sonic monument’ is created, live and recorded, composed not only of music, but also of interviews, environmental sounds, and untold stories.
Although these places are located in the middle of the city, they are treated as special stages, encouraging citizens to see and perceive them in new ways. For example, the everyday sounds of a park or the memories attached to a familiar street become part of the performance. Above all, the project focuses on voices and perspectives that have not been clearly heard within our society, placing audience and performer alike in direct, situated relationship with these places.
Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey are leading Australian audio conceptual artists who create unexpected situations for listening. Their work is driven by a curiosity and questioning about listening in human culture and seeks to evolve and engage with new processes and audiences, through public and participative interventions. Their highly awarded practice intertwines local, national and international relationships. Employing diverse approaches of experiencing and sensing through sound, they seek to push for a sensitive, critical, and learning practice of listening with care and innovation. Joho Kim is a writer and director whose work delves deeply into stories that emerge from nearby places and communities. Collaborating across disciplines, he creates performances that communicate with audiences through diverse forms such as film, installation, and the language of actors. Eunhee Cho is a music director who works primarily in contemporary and experimental electronic music, and has collaborated widely with artists across theatre, dance, and visual arts. Jin Yim is an independent producer and a member of the collective Project Dari, creating and curating works that are rooted in a strong interest in space, place, and narrative.
