K'arts, L'Académie de l'Union École supérieure professionnelle de théâtre du Limousin, Seinendan Theater Company
It has been 30 years since the premiere of Hirata Oriza’s representative play The Scientifically Minded. With the actors from Korea, France and Japan, In the Heart of Forest constitutes a synthesis for the series of The Scientifically Minded. Researchers of different nationalities specializing in primates discuss the differences between humans and monkeys. In this context, the story gradually depicts the difficulty and hope of multi-cultural coexistence.Synopsis
The story takes place at a fictional research institute located in Madagascar. It is French national institute specializing in primates. Here, Korean, French and Japanese researchers are studying primates and they directly use the monkeys to study. A psychologist wants to use them as materials for experiment. A tourism operator wants to make a theme park using them. Their numerous dialogues and ideas sometimes make them go against each other. Behind such a conflict there lies several issues: historical issues between Korea and Japan, France’s former colonies and Madagascar’s own historical challenges. These issues make their relationships even more complicated. In this tropical jungle, their dialogues continue endlessly.
Oriza Hirata started his theatrical career by founding the Seinendan Theater Company in the second year of university. He then began to take the lead with a new trend in the Japanese theater scene in the 1990’s with his ‘calm theater’ in serene and reflective style. His intelligent and sophisticated theatrical world, which delves into modern Japanese people’s identity in a cool-headed way, has drawn attention not only from the domestic scene but also from that of the entire world. "Since I have a scientific mind in a certain point, I always strive to move forward to find limits. So I am making an attempt to produce a multilingual play which is more complicated than any production I have ever tried. I believe that such an attempt will be able to emphasize multi-cultural society’s harmony in a very natural way."
